American director, actress, and producer Maggie Gyllenhaal has been officially named the President of the International Competition Jury for the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The announcement, confirmed by the board of directors of La Biennale di Venezia, marks a significant homecoming for the filmmaker.
A Return to the Lido
Gyllenhaal’s relationship with Venice is deep-rooted. Her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, premiered in competition at the festival in 2021, where it was met with critical acclaim and earned her the Best Screenplay award.

The Role of the Jury President

Festival director Alberto Barbera, who recommended Gyllenhaal for the post, cited her “singular vision” and her rapid ascent as one of the most compelling voices in modern directing.

The appointment comes during a prolific year for Gyllenhaal. Earlier in 2026, her latest directorial effort—the Warner Bros. title The Bride!—was released worldwide.
