Tina Knowles, the 72-year-old fashion designer and philanthropist, is opening up about the profound life changes she has made since her 2024 health scare. Speaking at the 2026 L.A. Times Festival of Books, the mother of Beyoncé and Solange shared that her journey through Stage 1 breast cancer taught her the “biggest lesson” of her life: the necessity of breaking free from codependency to prioritize her own well-being.
Knowles was diagnosed in July 2024 after discovering a tumor during a mammogram—a screening she admits she had delayed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a successful lumpectomy and a subsequent breast reduction, she was declared cancer-free in April 2025. Now, a year into her full recovery, she is using her platform to advocate for both physical and emotional health.
Breaking the Cycle of Codependency
For much of her life, Knowles was a “giver,” often at the expense of her own energy. However, her treatment process forced a period of introspection. “I realized I was quite codependent earlier,” Knowles confessed during the festival. “I just really take care of myself now and take time to enjoy my life and not be so stressed all the time.”
She noted that while she still occasionally “falls short” of this goal due to a busy schedule, being conscious of the habit is half the battle. “You can give and give and give, but you’re not going to be there to give to those people one day if you don’t take care of yourself,” she told the audience.
A Miracle of Early Detection
Knowles was candid about the “shuddering” thought of what might have happened if she had waited any longer. Having missed two routine screenings, she described finding the illness at Stage 1 as a “miracle.” She urged the audience to remain vigilant with their health checks, emphasizing that early detection saved her life and allowed her to remain the “matriarch” her family relies on.

Throughout her recovery, she was supported by her daughters, who she affectionately calls her “team.” Beyoncé and Solange were reportedly by her side seven days a week during her 2024 surgery and subsequent infection recovery. Today, Knowles isn’t just focused on surviving; she’s focused on “being fly” and thriving, having recently added a new chapter to her memoir, Matriarch, to inspire other women to lean on their support systems.
