Matt Damon has opened up about the major changes he made while preparing for his role in The Odyssey.

The 55-year-old actor plays Greek hero Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film.

Damon revealed that he had to lose weight for the role. He was asked to achieve a look that was “lean but strong.”

The actor said his usual weight is between 185 and 200 pounds. With intense training and a strict diet, he managed to reach 167 pounds.

Damon admitted that he had not been that light since high school.

One of the biggest changes involved Damon’s diet. The actor decided to stop eating gluten while preparing for the movie.

Speaking on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Damon described the process as a “complete lifestyle change.”

He explained that the preparation was different from previous fitness routines. Instead of fitting workouts around his normal schedule, everything had to change.

Damon also reduced his food intake and followed a much stricter eating plan.

Damon said he continued avoiding gluten after filming ended.

The actor explained that he noticed a major difference in how he felt after removing it from his diet.

He admitted that giving up bread, pasta, pizza and beer was difficult. Despite that, Damon said feeling better made the change worthwhile.

The actor also stressed that he had not realized how much gluten was affecting him before making the change.

“I didn’t realise the level,” Damon said while discussing the impact of his old diet.

Preparing for a Role in His 50s

Getting into shape for The Odyssey was also a different experience for Damon because of his age.

The actor had to combine regular exercise with strict eating habits to reach the physical shape required for Odysseus.
