Olivia Wilde is proving she can take a joke as well as she can direct a film. On Saturday, May 2, 2026, the 42-year-old filmmaker took to Instagram Stories to address a viral interview clip that had the internet drawing uncanny comparisons to the Lord of the Rings character, Gollum.
The source of the “startling” image was an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle during the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 24. Due to an extreme fish-eye lens and Wilde’s proximity to the camera, her features appeared distorted, specifically enlarging her eyes in a way that sparked a wave of “resurrected corpse” memes.
A Family Affair in Fact-Checking
Rather than a formal PR statement, Wilde chose to address the noise alongside her younger brother, Charlie Cockburn. In the humorous clip, Cockburn jokingly asked if she cared to address the rumors that she was, in fact, undead.
“Listen, that’s a fish-eye lens,” Wilde replied, unable to keep a straight face. “I admit, is that my best angle? Was that my best-ever look? No. It’s startling. It’s a startling image.” She went on to clarify that she wasn’t sure why she was positioned so close to the lens, but assured fans, “I’m not dead,” before hiding under her baseball cap in laughter.
