Appearing on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music show, the 23-year-old Grammy-winning artist spoke candidly about the challenges of writing love songs that feel honest and personally meaningful.
Rodrigo explained that she often questions how to capture real emotion in her music, especially when writing about relationships and vulnerability.
One of the central themes of the album, she said, is the emotional intensity that comes with deep attachment. She described love as both beautiful and terrifying, acknowledging the fear of loss that often accompanies strong emotional bonds.
Rodrigo also opened up about her creative process, revealing that several tracks were written during sleepless nights, including the song begged, which she wrote at 4 a.m. while quietly recording in a London hotel room.

She also discussed the closing track cigarette smoke, which was completed just days before the vinyl production deadline. The singer described it as a darker ending to the album, contrasting sharply with its opening track.
