Water Leak Forces BBC Look East and Radio Norfolk Off Air
A significant water leak at the BBC’s regional headquarters in Norwich has disrupted television and radio broadcasts across the East of England. The incident, which occurred at The Forum building, has forced regional bulletins to move to London until further notice.
“This is Not an April Fool”
The timing of the disruption on April 1st led many listeners to believe the news was a prank. However, BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Wayne Bavin confirmed the reality of the situation during his morning broadcast, stating, “If you’re listening in Norfolk this isn’t an April Fool… they’ve had a flood.”
Initial reports suggest the issue originated from a leaking air conditioning unit within the BBC’s section of The Forum. Fortunately, the leak is reportedly contained to the broadcaster’s studios and has not affected the rest of the public building.
Service Disruptions: What You Need to Know
While engineers work to assess the damage and dry out the equipment, the following service changes are in place:
BBC Look East: Morning TV bulletins are currently being broadcast from the BBC London studios.
BBC Radio Norfolk: Listeners are receiving shared output from BBC Radio Suffolk.
Affected Areas: The disruption impacts viewers and listeners across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridge shire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Northampton shire.
A Historic Location
BBC Look East has operated out of The Forum in Norwich city center since 2003. As a high-tech digital hub, the studio houses sensitive broadcasting equipment that is highly vulnerable to water damage. There is currently no confirmed timeline for when local production will return to the Norwich base.
