Sam Kieth, the comic book artist and writer who co-created Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and later conceived the surreal series The Maxx, has died. He was 63.
Kieth’s work was known for its dreamlike, psychological depth. His signature creation, The Maxx, featured a homeless man who existed as a powerless figure in the real world and a formidable superhero in a subconscious realm called the Outback.
The Maxx gained a wider audience through a cult-favorite animated adaptation on MTV in the 1990s. Kieth’s distinctive, fluid art style and exploration of identity and trauma left a lasting mark on the comics medium.
