The “Ghostface” drama has officially moved from the silver screen to the headlines. In a blistering new interview with Variety published on May 6, 2026, former franchise lead Melissa Barrera did not hold back her feelings regarding her firing from Scream 7 and the colleagues who chose to return in her absence.
Barrera, who was famously dropped from the production in 2023 over her social media posts regarding the Middle Eastern conflict, used the sit-down to address the moral implications of the franchise’s continuation.
Crossing the Picket Line
When asked directly if she felt that actors returning to the series—such as franchise veteran Neve Campbell—were “scabby” or “crossing a picket line” given the circumstances of her exit, Barrera was blunt.
“Oh, one hundred percent,” Barrera agreed. “I think they all are. And they have to live with that. The only way they were able to make that movie after what happened was to nostalgia-bait as much as possible.”
The actress suggested that the production’s reliance on legacy characters was a desperate attempt to salvage the film after her firing and the subsequent departure of her on-screen sister, Jenna Ortega.
Accusations of Fake Success
Beyond the cast, Barrera took aim at the studio itself. Despite Scream 7 being reported as a commercial hit with over $207 million at the global box office, Barrera questioned the validity of those figures.
The Claim: Barrera stated she believes Paramount “lied about the numbers” to make the film appear more successful than it was.
The Critique: She agreed with the interviewer’s assessment that the seventh installment “sucked,” citing a lack of creative substance following the overhaul of the original script.
The Fan Base: Despite the bad blood, Barrera noted that she still signs Scream memorabilia for fans at the stage door of her current Broadway show, Titanique, asserting that the studio “can’t ever take that away” from her.

The Aftermath of a Franchise Overhaul
The Scream 7 production was famously plagued by issues following Barrera’s exit. Director Christopher Landon also departed the project, calling it a “dream that turned into a nightmare.”
While the film ultimately moved forward with Neve Campbell’s return and a revamped storyline, Barrera’s latest comments ensure that the controversy remains a shadow over the franchise. Barrera concluded the interview by noting she is now focusing on “Chapter 2” of her career, prioritizing work with like-minded, “pro-Palestine” collaborators.
