Pat Steir, an artist celebrated for her luminous “waterfall” paintings, has died at 87.
Her signature technique involved spilling paint onto a vertical canvas and allowing it to flow downward in natural, gravity-driven streaks. Steir frequently described her process by saying the celebrated works seemed to paint themselves.
