Olivia Wilde Realized Too Late She Went Full “Insane Mode” on The Studio

Actress and director Olivia Wilde has opened up about her willingness to ruthlessly mock her own tabloid reputation on Seth Rogen’s hit Apple TV+ Hollywood satire, The Studio. The cringe-comedy series stars Rogen as Matt Remick, a frantic, validation-seeking studio head trying to keep a major movie studio afloat while managing massive celebrity egos.

The series features an array of real-world Hollywood heavyweights playing heavily exaggerated, wildly unlikable versions of themselves. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Wilde joked about her standout episode—where she plays an unhinged, auteur version of herself who literally steals her own film’s third-act reel to force the studio into giving her a higher budget.

I Went Crazier Than Anyone Else

When asked by host Jimmy Kimmel if she harbored any initial hesitation about making herself look completely erratic on television, Wilde revealed that her only real miscalculation was assuming everyone else was taking the comedy to the exact same extreme.

“No, but I thought everybody was doing it,” Wilde laughed. “And there was a moment when I realized that I had gone crazier than a lot of other people who had come on the show.”

Wilde explained that when she shot her chaotic sequence near the Hollywood Sign, she didn’t realize the full scope of the show’s guest lineup.

“At that point, I also didn’t know that like, Martin Scorsese was also doing it! I thought it was just like Seth and Evan [Goldberg] and their buddies coming by.”

Despite the onscreen chaos, the 42-year-old filmmaker emphasized that the experience was an absolute gift, noting that having the platform to openly make fun of her own public image was an incredibly liberating creative outlet.

The unhinged caricature subverted the traditional tabloid media narrative surrounding her career, allowing her to reclaim the narrative entirely through high-concept comedy.

Reunited with Rogen for A24’s The Invite

Wilde’s comedic chemistry with Rogen on the Apple TV+ series has seamlessly carried over into her next major cinematic project. The director is currently deep in promotional rounds for her highly anticipated third directorial feature, The Invite, which is locked in for an upcoming June 26, 2026 theatrical rollout via A24.

The adult comedy, adapted from Cesc Gay’s acclaimed Spanish film The People Upstairs, stars Wilde alongside an elite ensemble including Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton.
