In one of the most poignant moments of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, action icon Vin Diesel was overcome with emotion while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the franchise that defined a generation. On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the 58-year-old star led a celebratory screening of the original 2001 Fast & Furious, an event that quickly turned into a heartfelt tribute to the late Paul Walker.
The screening received a thunderous four-minute standing ovation, but it was Diesel’s shaky, tear-filled speech that left the elite French audience in silence.
A Brotherhood Beyond the Screen
Diesel graced the red carpet alongside original cast members Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Tyrese Gibson. However, the most significant presence was Meadow Walker, Paul’s daughter, who stood by Diesel’s side as he addressed the crowd.
“This is a film where brotherhood was introduced to our millennium, by myself and my brother Pablo,” Diesel told the audience, using his affectionate nickname for Walker. His voice broke repeatedly, making it difficult for the actor to finish his sentences as he reflected on their quarter-century legacy.

Meadow Walker Carrying the Torch
The XXX actor gave special credit to Meadow for her support, noting that she was the driving force behind his appearance at the festival. “The person that was not going to let me come alone here to represent that brotherhood was Meadow Walker,” he said through tears.
Diesel’s tribute focused on the unlikely bond formed during the casting of the first film in 2000. He concluded with a powerful message to the attendees:
“I pray that in your life you have a brother like Paul… It wasn’t on the script at first that this blond-haired, blue-eyed guy would be a brother to me.”
The Road Ahead: ‘Fast Forever’
The 25th-anniversary celebration serves as a massive cultural bridge to the franchise’s grand finale. Titled Fast Forever, the final sequel is currently slated for a 2028 release.
The film is set to reunite the “OG” family, including Diesel, Rodriguez, Brewster, Gibson, and Ludacris, alongside Sung Kang and Jason Momoa. Producers have hinted that the final chapter will heavily honor the foundation laid by Diesel and Walker in the 2001 original, bringing the multi-billion dollar saga full circle.
