Award-winning writer and producer Mindy Kaling has shared new details about her plans to return to acting after stepping back from on-screen roles to focus on writing, producing, and motherhood.
In a recent interview with Bustle, Kaling said she is eager to return to acting “sooner rather than later,” while carefully balancing her professional commitments with raising her three children. She emphasized that being present in her children’s lives remains a top priority.
Kaling, known for her breakout roles in The Office and The Mindy Project, noted that the evolution of streaming platforms has made it easier for actors to take on shorter projects. She explained that limited-episode formats could allow her to return to acting without the demanding schedules of traditional network television.
The star is a mother of three children, Katherine, Spencer, and Anne, and has largely kept her family life private. Since the pandemic, she has shifted her focus toward behind-the-scenes work through her production company, Kaling International.
During this period, she has created and executive produced several successful series, including Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls, and Running Point, strengthening her influence in modern television storytelling.
Kaling also revealed creative plans for the future, expressing interest in developing and starring in a new series centered on dating in your 40s in Los Angeles. She described the concept as a realistic exploration of relationships at different life stages, including divorce, widowhood, and late-stage singlehood.
According to Kaling, the idea reflects the kind of story she would personally want to watch, signaling a possible return not just as an actor but also as a creator leading new narratives.
Her comments highlight a renewed chapter in her career, blending creative ambition with a grounded approach to family life.
