Sebastian Stan Reveals Why He Turned Down Stefan Role in The Vampire Diaries
Sebastian Stan has opened up about a major role he once turned down before The Vampire Diaries became a global hit.
The Thunderbolts actor revealed that he was offered the role of Stefan Salvatore, which eventually went to Paul Wesley. Stan said he decided not to take the part because he was exhausted after a difficult period in his career and was hesitant to return to supernatural projects.
Sebastian Stan Was Offered the Role of Stefan Salvatore
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on October 5, Sebastian Stan revealed that he was initially offered the role of Stefan in The Vampire Diaries.
The role later went to Paul Wesley, who played Stefan throughout the hit supernatural drama.
Stan explained that he had recently come off Kings, which had lasted only one season on NBC. The experience left him feeling burned out and uncertain about committing to another television project.
Why Sebastian Stan Turned Down The Vampire Diaries
Stan said he was worried about signing up for another show that might not make it beyond its first season.
At the time, he was also hesitant about becoming closely associated with supernatural stories. He had previously appeared in the 2006 film The Covenant, which was also centered around supernatural themes.
Because of those experiences, Stan decided not to take the role of Stefan.
The decision turned out to be significant, as The Vampire Diaries later became one of the most successful supernatural television dramas of its era.

Paul Wesley Became Stefan in The Vampire Diaries
After Sebastian Stan passed on the role, Paul Wesley was cast as Stefan Salvatore.
Wesley starred alongside Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries. The series premiered in 2009 and ran for eight seasons before ending in 2017.
Stefan became one of the show’s central characters, making Wesley widely recognized for the role.
Sebastian Stan Has No Regrets About Turning Down Stefan
Despite the success of The Vampire Diaries, Stan said he does not regret his decision.
Looking back, the actor said he feels grateful that he did not take on the role at that stage of his career. He explained that he may not have been emotionally or mentally prepared for the level of exposure that came with a major television hit.
Stan also reflected on how his focus was different when he was younger.
Rather than wondering what could have happened, the actor said he is comfortable with how his career developed and would not change the path he took.
Sebastian Stan’s Career After The Vampire Diaries
Although Stan did not become Stefan Salvatore, his career continued to grow across film and television.
He eventually became widely known for playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His recent work includes Thunderbolts, further establishing him as a major Hollywood star.
Looking back at the role he once turned down, Stan appears comfortable with the decision. For the actor, missing out on The Vampire Diaries ultimately became part of a career path he would not change.
