Madonna is revisiting her early life struggles, revealing how she survived years of financial instability and temporary housing before becoming one of the world’s most successful music artists.
In a recent conversation with Interview Magazine, the 67-year-old singer reflected on her life in 1982, describing a period when she had little money and no permanent home. She said she often had to rely on friends and short-term arrangements just to have a place to stay.
“I had no money. I was really a scavenger,” Madonna shared, describing how she moved between apartments, sublets, and temporary living spaces while trying to build her career.
She explained that her living situation was constantly changing, with stays lasting only a few months at a time before she was forced to move again. The instability, she said, became a normal part of her early life in New York City.

Madonna also recalled living in illegal loft spaces in Manhattan’s Garment District, an area known at the time for attracting struggling artists, designers, and creatives.
She admitted the situation was not always safe. The singer said she often moved between floors or apartments when she felt uncomfortable with other residents in the building.
“If there was a weirdo living on one floor, I’d go to the next floor,” she recalled, highlighting the unpredictable and sometimes unsafe conditions she faced.
Despite these challenges, Madonna said the period played a key role in shaping her resilience and determination as an artist. Just a year later, she released her self-titled debut album in 1983, marking the beginning of her rise to global fame.
