John Mellencamp capped off a memorable night at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards by receiving the Icon Award, presented by his daughter, Teddi Mellencamp.
The 74-year-old rocker was visibly emotional as Teddi paid tribute, calling her father her “best friend.” In a touching moment, John handed the trophy back to her, acknowledging her ongoing battle with stage 4 melanoma.
Mellencamp then addressed the audience with humor and encouragement. “I’ve been doing this 50 years and I’ve enjoyed most of it,” he said. “For all you young people starting out, there’s nothing closer to heaven than writing a song, hearing it on the radio, or performing live.”
He followed his speech with an acoustic set, performing timeless hits like “Jack & Diane” and “Pink Houses,” showcasing the enduring appeal of his music.
Since his 1976 debut, Mellencamp has sold over 60 million albums worldwide and earned a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is also a co-founder of Farm Aid, alongside Willie Nelson and Neil Young, supporting American farmers for more than four decades.
