A Peaceful Retirement in Florida
In an exclusive update on April 7, 2026, the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida, revealed that Bubbles, the chimpanzee once famously owned by Michael Jackson, is thriving as a “senior statesman” of the sanctuary. Now 43 years old, Bubbles has defied the average 33-year life expectancy for male chimps in captivity, spending his days far from the flashbulbs of the Bad tour.
According to sanctuary president Patti Ragan, Bubbles has fully shed his Hollywood persona. “He is 100% chimpanzee now,” she noted, highlighting a life defined by naps, grooming, and slow meals rather than music videos and press conferences.
The Difficult Transition: From Human Home to Ape Group
While Bubbles’ life with Michael Jackson included taking tea with the Mayor of Osaka and starring in the Liberian Girl video, his early years as a pet created significant social hurdles.
Fear of Females: When Bubbles arrived at the sanctuary 21 years ago, he was initially terrified of the female chimpanzees. This is a common issue for chimps raised in human homes who lack “species-specific” social skills.
Finding Confidence: After several years of growth and adjustment, Bubbles eventually found his footing. He has served as the confident leader of his social group for many years.
His Current “Clique”: Bubbles currently lives with one male companion, Stryker, and three females: Oopsie, Boma, and Kodua.

Bubbles the Artist: Enrichment and Naps
Life at the sanctuary is designed to stimulate the apes’ natural instincts. For Bubbles, this includes:
Abstract Painting: Bubbles is one of the sanctuary’s resident artists, producing swathes of impressionistic color. While he occasionally tosses his work aside, these paintings are often kept as part of the sanctuary’s enrichment programs.
The “Senior” Routine: Like many elderly individuals, Bubbles enjoys a quiet life. His favorite activities include exploring the sanctuary’s aerial tramway, lounging in the shade, and going to bed early.
Indifference to Fame: Despite occasional visits from MJ fans, Bubbles shows little interest in human attention, preferring the company of his fellow apes and the privacy of the sanctuary’s wooded habitats.
The Legacy of Celebrity Pets
Patti Ragan uses Bubbles’ story as a cautionary tale about the complexities of keeping great apes as pets. While they are intelligent and entertaining as infants, they quickly become incredibly strong and independent. The sanctuary currently cares for 70 apes who, like Bubbles, were rescued from the entertainment industry or private ownership and cannot be released into the wild.
