The events of November 1989 that toppled the regime in Czechoslovakia impacted more than just the Slovak and Czech majorities. They also deeply affected hundreds of thousands from minority groups living there then and now. These groups also gained freedom. Or did they, entirely? To understand how they experienced the Velvet Revolution and the societal transformation that followed, their own voices are essential. This first part of the series ‘A Different November’ presents the memories and reflections of queer activists Hana Fábry and Jaro Gyurik. Both are considered founders of queer activism in Slovakia. Their personal accounts offer a vital perspective on a historic moment. The series aims to broaden the narrative of 1989. It explores the complex realities of liberation for all citizens.
