Anne Hathaway Reveals Why She Couldn’t Do Hot Ones for Verity
Anne Hathaway had hoped to take part in the real Hot Ones challenge while promoting her upcoming film Verity, but pregnancy forced her to change those plans.
The Oscar-winning actress discussed the idea during an appearance on the Talk of the Townsends podcast on September 25.
Hathaway explained that she had planned to experience the real spicy-wing challenge after filming a similar scene for the movie.
Anne Hathaway Wanted to Do Hot Ones for Verity
While discussing her role in Verity, Hathaway revealed that she wanted the film’s promotional campaign to include a real appearance on Hot Ones.
She recalled suggesting the idea during a production meeting, along with a Gayle King interview and an appearance on Call Her Daddy.
Hathaway said she thought those appearances would help establish her character, Verity Crawford, as a major cultural figure.
Hathaway Filmed a Fake Hot Ones Challenge
In Verity, Hathaway’s character appears on a fictional version of Hot Ones hosted by Sean Evans.
The character is interviewed while eating increasingly spicy chicken wings.
Hathaway explained that the first three wings used during filming were real. After that, the production switched to dummy wings.
The actress had hoped to take on the real challenge during the film’s press tour.
Why Anne Hathaway Couldn’t Do the Real Challenge
Hathaway said she expected to participate in the actual Hot Ones challenge after filming the scene.
However, her plans changed after she became pregnant.
“I thought that I was gonna be able to do the Hot Ones challenge to do press for this film because it just made sense. But then, I got pregnant,” she said.
She explained that her doctor advised her against taking part in the spicy-wing challenge because it could potentially trigger early labour.
As a result, Hathaway still has not completed the famous 10-wing challenge.
Hathaway Compares Hot Ones to Her Acting Experience
Hathaway also explained why she wanted to experience the real challenge instead of simply pretending to do it on screen.
She compared the experience to an actor’s first on-screen kiss, saying she would rather experience something for real instead of having the first experience while playing a character.
For Hathaway, the same idea applied to Hot Ones.
She said she still hopes to take on the challenge and joked that she might finally attempt it next year.

Anne Hathaway’s Verity Role
Based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling thriller, Verity follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, played by Dakota Johnson.
Lowen is hired to complete the unfinished book of Verity Crawford after the author becomes paralysed following an accident.
Hathaway plays Verity, who appears in the film’s fictional interviews, including the Hot Ones-style segment.
Meanwhile, Hathaway and her husband, Adam Shulman, announced in June that they are expecting their third child. The couple are already parents to sons Jonathan and Jack.
For now, fans will have to wait to see Hathaway take on the real Hot Ones challenge.
