Whitney Houston’s legendary career is being celebrated in a new way as Mattel has officially released the first-ever Barbie doll inspired by the late music icon.

The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll arrives as a tribute to the singer’s extraordinary career, timeless music and lasting influence on generations of fans and artists.

The collectible doll was released on August 9, 2026, which would have been Houston’s 63rd birthday. The launch also comes during a year marking four decades of her influential career.

Whitney Houston Barbie Doll Inspired by Iconic Music Video

The new Barbie pays tribute to one of Houston’s most recognizable musical moments: her 1987 hit “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

Mattel recreated Houston’s appearance from the music video, including a purple tank-style dress, colorful earrings, voluminous hair and vibrant makeup. The doll also comes with a microphone stand, reflecting Houston’s identity as one of the most celebrated performers in pop music.

The attention to detail was an important part of the project. According to Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and the executor of her estate, the team worked carefully on elements including the singer’s hair, earrings, clothing and shoes.

A Barbie Project Decades in the Making

The Whitney Houston Barbie has been a long time coming.

Pat Houston revealed that conversations about creating a Mattel doll began roughly 20 years ago. Whitney herself had previously expressed interest in a doll connected to The Bodyguard, her hugely successful 1992 movie and its accompanying soundtrack.

Although that earlier idea never materialized, the project eventually returned in a form designed to celebrate Houston’s music and cultural legacy.

Why Mattel Chose “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”

For the final design, Mattel and Pat Houston selected the look from “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” one of the singer’s most enduring songs.

The colorful 1980s-inspired appearance captures an important period in Houston’s career and gives fans a recognizable representation of the performer.

The song remains closely associated with Houston and continues to introduce her music to new audiences decades after its original release.

Whitney Houston’s Legacy Celebrated Through Barbie

The release comes during a significant year for Houston’s legacy. In 2026, the singer is also being honored with a Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award, while her impact is being recognized through the New Jersey Hall of Fame.

Houston died in 2012 at the age of 48, but her influence on music, fashion and popular culture continues to endure.

Her career produced numerous major hits, while her powerful voice and performances helped establish her as one of the defining singers of her generation.

Where to Buy the Whitney Houston Barbie Doll

The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll is now available through major retailers following its unveiling at the Fifth Legacy of Love Gala in Atlanta on August 8.

Fans and collectors can purchase the doll through Target, Amazon, Walmart and Mattel Creations, subject to availability.

The collectible has also attracted significant attention from Barbie and Whitney Houston fans, with some shoppers reporting strong demand around its release.

    A Tribute for New Generations

More than a collector’s item, the Whitney Houston Barbie represents an effort to introduce the singer’s legacy to another generation.

By recreating one of Houston’s most recognizable looks, Mattel has combined music history, fashion and pop culture in a collectible designed to celebrate an artist whose influence continues to be felt around the world.

For longtime Whitney Houston fans, the doll offers a nostalgic connection to one of her most iconic eras. For younger audiences, it provides another way to discover the music and legacy of one of pop music’s most unforgettable voices.
