Billie Eilish is known for her unfiltered honesty, but a recent revelation explains exactly why she refuses to play by the traditional Hollywood PR handbook. Appearing on the Tuesday, May 5, episode of the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the 24-year-old singer recalled the “horror” of her first and only media training session.
Now a 10-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar recipient, Eilish looked back on her 14-year-old self—a “strong-willed and bossy” child who was suddenly thrust into the global spotlight after the viral success of “Ocean Eyes.”
The PR Meltdown I Sobbed Through It
As her career began to skyrocket, Eilish was enrolled in a professional PR training session designed to polish her interview skills. The experience, however, was a total disaster for the naturally transparent artist.
“I did PR training when I was 14 and I sobbed through it. I hated it so much. It was literally like the scariest s*** of all time,” Eilish told Poehler. The session, which lasted less than an hour, ended with the young star in tears. “I sobbed and I left, and I did not follow any of the rules after that.”
Eilish explained that the training felt like an attempt to erase her natural personality. In her early career, her “truthful nature” led her to answer every interview question with complete sincerity—a habit that often terrified her management team.
Learning the Balance of Authenticity
While the teenage Eilish rejected the “rules,” she admitted that the experience eventually taught her a valuable lesson about boundaries. Over time, she realized that while she didn’t want to be “fake,” she did need to be careful about how much of her soul she shared with the public.
“It was important for me to learn and I’m glad I learned it,” she insisted. Poehler, known for her own sharp wit and authenticity, noted that the experience must have been “painful” because Eilish’s brand is built on being real. “You feel it and you kind of can’t fake it,” Poehler added.
A New Visual Era James Cameron and the 3D Experience
The podcast appearance comes at a busy time for Eilish, who is currently promoting her groundbreaking new concert film, Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).

Set for release on May 8, 2026, the film is a high-profile collaboration with legendary director James Cameron. Co-directed by Eilish herself, the project uses 17 cameras—some operated by Cameron—to capture the raw, unpolished energy of her performances. The film reportedly includes intimate, “media training-free” moments of Eilish backstage, offering fans the exact kind of transparency she fought so hard to keep at 14.
