Niall Horan Credits Olivia Rodrigo for Bringing the “Bridge” Back to Pop Music
Two of pop’s biggest names are dominating the conversation as they prepare for a high-stakes summer. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Niall Horan praised Olivia Rodrigo for her structural influence on modern songwriting—specifically her ability to revive the lost art of the “bridge.”
As both artists prepare to drop highly anticipated new albums in June 2026, Horan highlighted how Rodrigo’s signature shifts in melody and tempo have changed the game for pop writers everywhere.
The “Rodrigo Effect” on Songwriting
Niall, who is currently promoting his upcoming album Dinner Party, pointed to the unexpected musical turns in Olivia’s hits as a major catalyst for the current pop landscape.
“I feel like Olivia Rodrigo has been a big influence on that for pop writers,” Niall noted, referencing the dramatic shift in her debut smash Drivers License. “‘Red lights, stop signs…’ — she does that a lot. What I like about Olivia’s music is you feel like you’re getting one song and then you get a completely different song. It completely flips on its head musically.”
From Fangirl to Contemporary
The mutual respect between the two comes as no surprise to fans. Recent resurfaced social media posts show that before her own rise to superstardom, Olivia was a dedicated One Direction “fangirl.”
Now, as she prepares to release her third studio album, titled You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love, she stands as a peer to the very artists she once admired. Her new project is expected to continue her streak of emotionally raw, structurally complex storytelling that Horan finds so compelling.
