Robert Irwin and his sister Bindi Irwin have paid tribute to their late father, Steve Irwin, on the 20th anniversary of his death.
Steve died on September 4, 2006, at the age of 44. A stingray injured him while he was filming an underwater documentary at the Great Barrier Reef.
Robert remembered his father by sharing a childhood photo. The image showed him sitting on Steve’s lap as a baby.
He kept his message short and emotional, writing that his father’s legacy would live forever.
Bindi also honoured Steve with a touching video from one of his old interviews. In the clip, Steve spoke proudly about becoming a father after Bindi’s birth.
She also reflected on the grief her family has carried for two decades.
Bindi said her family lost its “superhero” when Steve died. She explained that grief remains part of their lives, but the love behind that grief remains even stronger.
The 28-year-old also said she once believed her father’s main legacy was wildlife conservation. Over time, she came to see his greatest legacy as love for both people and the planet.
Steve’s influence has also reached another generation.
Bindi revealed that her five-year-old daughter regularly watches her grandfather’s documentaries. She affectionately knows him as “Grandpa Crocodile,” despite never meeting him.
Twenty years after his death, Steve Irwin’s passion for wildlife and family continues to inspire millions around the world.
