Radhika Apte Explains Why She Chooses OTT Films Over Theatrical Releases
Radhika Apte has opened up about her approach to choosing films, explaining why she does not focus on whether a project will release in cinemas or on an OTT platform.
The actress, known for taking on unconventional roles, believes several business decisions influence how films reach audiences. She would rather focus on the project itself than worry about its release format.
In a recent interview with PTI, Radhika said, “There are so many business decisions dependent on that; I’d rather be like ‘let the film come out one way or another.’”
She also pointed out that the theatrical business has become difficult to predict in recent years.
“With theatrical releases in the last few years we don’t know what is working or what isn’t,” she explained.
Radhika Apte Discusses the Challenges of Theatrical Films
Radhika believes a film’s box office performance often depends on the popularity of its lead actor. According to her, established stars can attract audiences to cinemas, while other talented performers may not receive the same opening.
The actress admitted that a theatrical film featuring her as the lead might struggle commercially, even if critics and viewers consider it an excellent film.
“A theatrical release where I am the lead would probably tank even if it’s the best film,” she said.
Her comments highlight the commercial pressures actors face when choosing projects for the big screen. A film’s quality does not always guarantee strong ticket sales, especially when audience interest depends heavily on star power.

Radhika Apte on Star Power in Bollywood
Radhika also spoke candidly about the difference between her box office pull and that of leading Bollywood actresses such as Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone.
She explained that she does not have the same ability to attract a large theatrical audience based on her name alone.
“I don’t have that, like generally, I’m not an Alia Bhatt or Deepika Padukone where you can, at least, hope that they’ll be opening,” she said.
Radhika added that this reality can influence the kinds of roles available to her in theatrical films. She suggested that she may need to work on projects where male actors take the lead.
Her remarks offer insight into how casting decisions and commercial expectations can shape opportunities for actresses in the film industry.
