Evangeline Lilly Reveals Why She Left Hollywood Behind
Evangeline Lilly has opened up about her decision to step away from Hollywood six years ago. The actress says she wanted to make a real difference in the world through hands-on humanitarian work rather than remain in the spotlight.
During an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network on October 19, Lilly explained that acting gave her the chance to tell stories. However, she wanted to have a more direct impact on people’s lives.
“There are many people who will claim that actors are making the world a better place,” she said. “But I’ve always wanted a much more hands-on impact.”
The actress also revealed that she has spent 22 years doing humanitarian work in Rwanda.
Evangeline Lilly Wanted a Different Life
Lilly became widely known for playing Kate Austen in the hit television series Lost. She later appeared in Marvel films, including Ant-Man, and built a successful career in Hollywood.
Despite her success, however, the actress felt that following the usual path in the entertainment industry did not fully satisfy her.
“I’d like to tell stories of my own instead of being in front of the camera,” Lilly explained.
She also admitted that fame was never something she enjoyed. In her view, public attention was part of the price actors paid for the financial rewards of their careers.
“I’ve always hated being famous,” she said, adding that she had never hidden her feelings about life in the spotlight.

Leaving Hollywood Was Not Easy
Although Lilly made the decision to leave Hollywood with confidence, adjusting to life outside the industry was not always easy.
The actress admitted that success and public recognition can be difficult to leave behind. She explained that hearing people praise her work had brought her happiness, which sometimes made her question her decision.
“When you’re successful at something, it feels really good when the world says, ‘We love you! You’re amazing!’” she shared.
However, Lilly also revealed that she sometimes experienced fear and uncertainty about what would come next.
Leaving Hollywood also meant stepping away from the power, influence and potential financial rewards that came with her acting career.
Evangeline Lilly Finds Peace Away From Fame
Six years after stepping away from the entertainment industry, Lilly says she has found greater peace in her decision.
The actress, who shares two children with Norman Kali, believes her life has a greater purpose beyond Hollywood.
She expressed her faith in God’s plan for her future and appears comfortable with the path she has chosen.
While Lilly once entertained audiences through her performances, she now wants to focus on meaningful work beyond the camera. Her decision reflects a personal shift in priorities, with humanitarian efforts and a quieter life taking centre stage.
For Lilly, leaving Hollywood was not simply about ending an acting career. Instead, it was about choosing a life that better reflects her values and desire to make a difference.
