    The Burden of Silence

In a candid new interview with Variety, actor Pedro Pascal has addressed the growing pressure on public figures to remain neutral. Known for his roles in The Last of Us and the upcoming Eddington, Pascal challenged the notion that vocalizing political stances is the easy choice. On the contrary, he argued that staying silent is the “harder path,” citing a moral obligation rooted in his upbringing.

“I would have too hard of a time living with myself,” Pascal explained. “It’s the way I was raised. Decency and compassion. The idea of the vulnerable being scapegoated and terrorized in this way is unspeakably painful.”

    Defiance at Cannes and Beyond

This isn’t the first time Pascal has swung back at those who suggest artists should “stick to acting.” At the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, while promoting Ari Aster’s Eddington, the actor delivered a fiery response to the political intimidation of creatives.

“Fuck the people that try to make you scared,” he told the press conference crowd. “And fight back. And don’t let them win. Keep telling the stories, keep expressing yourself, and keep fighting for it.” His rhetoric underscores a refusal to let “backlash culture” dictate artistic or personal expression.

Celebrity Discourse in the 2026 Climate

Pascal’s comments arrive during a period of heightened tension between the entertainment industry and political leadership. With public figures like Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen frequently finding themselves in the crosshairs of political rhetoric, Pascal’s stance adds a significant voice to the debate over the role of celebrities in a democracy.

For Pascal, engaging with progressive issues isn’t about PR—it’s about the “unspeakable pain” of watching marginalized groups be targeted. While many peers opt for the safety of neutrality, Pascal’s recent statements confirm he is doubling down on a platform of active engagement.
