Meryl Streep Critiques “Marvel-ization” of Modern Film

In a move that has divided the internet, three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep has voiced her frustration with the current state of Hollywood storytelling. While promoting her latest film, The Devil Wears Prada 2, the 76-year-old icon appeared on Hits Radio Breakfast to discuss the evolution of cinema. Streep claimed that modern movies have been “Marvel-ized,” moving toward a binary of “good guys and villains” that she finds inherently uninteresting. “It’s so boring,” Streep remarked, arguing that true cinematic depth comes from the “messier” grey areas of human behavior—a quality she believes her new sequel embraces.

Fan Backlash: MCU Defendes Strike Back

Streep’s comments quickly went viral, drawing a sharp response from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fanbase. Many fans took to social media to defend the franchise, pointing to complex characters like Wanda Maximoff or Thanos as evidence that Marvel does indeed explore flawed heroes and humanized villains. Critics of Streep’s statement suggested she may be out of touch with the genre, while others accused her of using the “Marvel-sized” jab as a calculated marketing tactic to boost interest in her own film. “You have to take a shot at Marvel to promote movies now—it’s the rule of the business,” one viral comment noted.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Hits Theaters

The controversy comes just as The Devil Wears Prada 2 officially opened in theaters on May 1, 2026. Reuniting the original powerhouse cast—including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci—the sequel follows Miranda Priestly as she navigates the decline of print media and a leadership crisis at Runway magazine. Despite the “Marvel-ization” debate, the film has seen a strong Day 1 box office performance, proving that audiences are still hungry for the character-driven “messiness” that Streep continues to champion.
