Jimmy Kimmel to Go Dark for Stephen Colbert’s Historic ‘Late Show’ Finale

In a rare display of late-night solidarity, Jimmy Kimmel has announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will not air a new episode on Thursday, May 21, 2026. The decision was made to honor the final broadcast of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, ensuring that all eyes remain on Colbert as he bids farewell to CBS after an 11-year run.

Kimmel confirmed the move to LateNighter, explaining that his ABC program will transition to a rerun next Thursday to clear the field for his long-time friend and colleague. By “going dark,” Kimmel is effectively encouraging his audience to tune into CBS for the conclusion of a late-night era.

    A Precedent of Respect

This isn’t the first time Kimmel has hit the “pause” button for a legendary send-off. In 2015, he made the same gesture for David Letterman’s final show, famously telling his audience, “I have too much respect for Dave to do anything that would distract viewers from watching his final show.”

Kimmel and Colbert have seen their bond strengthen over the past year, particularly following the shock announcement of The Late Show’s cancellation in July 2025. The two have frequently appeared on each other’s programs, uniting against political pressures and navigating a turbulent landscape for late-night television.

The End of a 33-Year Franchise

Colbert’s departure on May 21 marks more than just a host transition; it marks the total termination of The Late Show franchise, which began with David Letterman in 1993. CBS executives previously cited “purely financial reasons” for the cancellation, stating that the show would not be replaced. Instead, the 11:35 PM time slot will be handed over to Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed starting May 22.

The final weeks of the show have featured a revolving door of high-profile guests, including:

A “Strike Force Five” Reunion: Featuring Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver.

Iconic Appearances: David Letterman (returning to his old stage), John Hanks, Pedro Pascal, and former President Barack Obama.

What’s Next for the Time Slot?

While Kimmel airs a repeat and Colbert takes his final bow, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is currently still scheduled to air a new episode on May 21. Following the finale, CBS will officially retire the Late Show brand, leaving a significant void in the network’s 11:35 PM time slot for the first time in over three decades.
