Judith Sheldon, 84, the daughter of legendary Hollywood director William Wyler, and her husband Wylie Sheldon, 86, were found dead inside their parked vehicle along Interstate 5 in California during a severe heatwave.
Authorities say the couple was traveling toward Ashland, Oregon, on June 15 when California Highway Patrol officers discovered their Jeep Compass just north of Redding. The engine was still running and the fan was on high, but the air conditioning was not functioning. Temperatures in the area had reached approximately 109 degrees that day, prompting an extreme heat warning.
According to officials, neither Judith nor Wylie had access to water or fluids during the trip. First responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but both were pronounced dead.
Judith Sheldon was a prominent figure in the San Francisco arts community and served as chair of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. She often honored her father’s legacy by showcasing memorabilia from his celebrated career, including multiple Academy Awards.
