Crazy Rich Asians cast returns for an HBO sequel series

Fans of Crazy Rich Asians have a reason to celebrate. HBO has ordered an eight-episode sequel series based on the hit 2018 romantic comedy and Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels.

Several familiar faces will return for the new show. Constance Wu and Henry Golding will reprise their roles as Rachel Chu and Nick Young. Ronny Chieng will return as Eddie Cheng, while Michelle Yeoh will appear in a recurring role as Eleanor Young, Nick’s mother.

The series will continue the story after the events of the original film. HBO has not announced a premiere date yet.

Why Crazy Rich Asians Is Moving to TV

Director Jon M. Chu has explained why the sequel is heading to television instead of returning to cinemas first.

In a 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chu said the story needed more room to explore its characters. He explained that a single movie could not cover everything the team wanted to include.

However, Chu has not ruled out another film in the future.

Adele Lim Leads the Sequel Series

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original movie, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She will work alongside Kwan, Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.

Lim said the eight-episode format will allow the creative team to explore the characters and the world of Kwan’s books in greater detail. She also described the project as a family reunion for the cast and crew.

Kwan thanked fans for their patience and promised that the wait would be worthwhile.

Original Stars Return for a New Chapter

The original film followed Rachel Chu as she travelled to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young. She soon discovered that Nick belonged to one of the country’s wealthiest families.

Rachel then faced pressure from his mother, Eleanor, as she tried to find her place in Nick’s world.

The upcoming series will give viewers more time with these characters. With several original stars returning, the HBO sequel aims to bring back the romance, family drama, and glamour that made the film a hit.
