RAYE returns with her second album, THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE., a 73-minute odyssey of curated melancholy and theatrical heartache.

The British singer transforms despair into a cinematic experience, blending jazz, orchestral pop, and R&B with meticulous flair.

From the first track to the last, she constructs a world where heartbreak feels both glamorous and deeply personal.

On this album, RAYE narrates sorrow like a character in a Parisian noir film: seven Negronis deep, listening to Édith Piaf, adorned in a crimson dress and Jimmy Choose tapping on wet cobblestones. Every track is a carefully staged moment of curated melancholy, where the pain is filtered through a lens of Old Hollywood drama.

“I’ll be sad and beautiful,” she promises on Winter Woman., and throughout the album, she never breaks that character.

The album’s theatricality stems from RAYE’s personal journey. Before her debut, she spent years at Polydor watching her songs shelved or handed to other artists. After leaving to release her debut independently, she reclaimed her voice on this follow-up, letting 17 tracks sprawl across four seasonal acts. Each song embraces slow builds, spoken-word interludes, and runtime-defying lengths that reward patient listeners with nuanced storytelling.

THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. thrives on contrast. RAYE oscillates between jazz, orchestral pop, and R&B, invoking influences from Aretha Franklin and Fred Wesley to Vivaldi and Hans Zimmer.

Tracks like Winter Wave and Swarm offer autumnal wistfulness, while WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! delivers brassy, cartoonish desperation. At the heart of the album, I Know You’re Hurting. showcases raw vulnerability, a patient exploration of grief without humor as a shield.

Though the theatricality may overwhelm some spoken-word tangents and dramatic musical detours occasionally pull listeners out of the moment the peaks justify the journey. The final track, Happier Times Ahead., signals hope as a conscious, daily decision, offering solace amid the sweeping emotional grandeur. RAYE’s album asserts that sadness can be spectacular, and optimism is worth fighting for.

On the opener, I Will Overcome., RAYE sets the tone: “This is a song to remind me, since I needed one.” By the album’s end, she ensures that every listener shares in that reminder, a testament to the power of music as both art and emotional lifeline.
