James Gunn Calls Henry Cavill’s Exit “Terrible”
During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn was asked what it was like to tell an actor who had played Superman that the studio wanted to move forward with someone else.
Gunn gave a short but emotional answer: “It’s terrible.”
He recalled learning that the decision to end Cavill’s time as Superman had been finalized. According to Gunn, he felt the situation was unfair and disappointing.
The filmmaker also explained that he and fellow DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran made a point of sitting down with Cavill to discuss the decision directly.Kim Kardashian Says Dancing With the Stars Left Her “Traumatized for Life”

His comments offer a glimpse into the personal side of a major casting change. While studios often make decisions based on long-term franchise plans, those choices can be difficult for the actors involved.
Why DC Replaced Henry Cavill as Superman
Cavill played Superman in films connected to Zack Snyder’s DC universe, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.
However, DC Studios began reshaping its superhero franchise after Gunn and Safran took leadership roles. The new direction included a younger version of Clark Kent, which meant casting a different actor for the role.
David Corenswet was eventually chosen to play Superman in Gunn’s 2025 film, Superman.
The reboot marked a fresh chapter for the character, rather than a continuation of Cavill’s previous storyline.

Gunn’s comments show that the decision to move on from Cavill was not necessarily a reflection of the actor himself. Instead, the change was tied to the studio’s plans for the future of the DC universe.
Cavill’s portrayal remains an important part of the character’s modern film history. Meanwhile, Corenswet has taken on the role as DC Studios builds its new superhero slate.Sylvester Stallone Reveals Why He Regrets Doing His Own Stunts
Although Gunn described Cavill’s departure as unfair and disappointing, he also made clear that the actor handled the news with professionalism.
The conversation highlights the complicated choices behind major franchise reboots, where creative plans can mean saying goodbye to familiar faces.
