Helen Worth Breaks Silence on Coronation Street Exit After 50 Years
Coronation Street icon Helen Worth has finally revealed the real reason she stepped away from her legendary role as Gail Platt. After half a century in Weatherfield, the actress admitted that the grueling production pace eventually took its toll.
The actress noted that her final on-screen husband, John Thomson (who played Jesse Chadwick), was a massive support during her final months. “I was rattling a little bit,” she joked, referencing the mental and physical exhaustion of filming approximately 4,000 episodes over five decades.
The Challenges of Modern Soap Schedules
Worth was joined on stage by former co-star Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played the beloved Hayley Cropper. The two discussed how the filming intensity has shifted over the years. Worth explained that modern schedules have become “worse,” often requiring actors to jump between different episodes and timelines within a single day of shooting.
“It just went on and it didn’t stop until last year when I’d done 50 years,” Worth remarked. Despite the exhaustion, she emphasized that her love for the character of Gail Platt never wavered until the very end.

Although she briefly reprised her role via a video call on Christmas Day 2025, the actress confirmed that her time as a series regular has truly come to a close. For many viewers, her departure marks the end of an era for the world’s longest-running soap opera.
