White tie is the most formal dress code in society. Its strict requirements set it apart from other attire standards.

The tradition dates back to the 19th century. It emerged from European and American high-society evening events. The code solidified during the Edwardian era as the pinnacle of formal wear.

For men, white tie demands a black tailcoat with matching trousers. A white piqué waistcoat and a white bow tie are essential. Shirts must have a stiff front and wing collar. Patent leather shoes complete the ensemble.

Women are expected to wear full-length evening gowns. Floor-length dresses are mandatory. Elbow-length gloves are traditional, often worn until seated. Formal jewelry and an elegant hairstyle are standard.

This dress code is reserved for the most solemn occasions. State dinners, royal events, and major opera openings are typical settings. It signifies the highest level of decorum and respect.

Understanding white tie provides insight into historical social customs. Its continued use preserves a tradition of extreme formality for exceptional events.
