The pop star discussed the track during an appearance on iHeartCountry House Party on September 5. She said fans have closely examined the lyrics and discovered several layers of meaning.
Swift explained that she deliberately used words and images that can carry more than one interpretation.
One example appears in the song’s opening lyrics. Swift focuses on the word “daze,” which listeners could also read as “days.” She said the idea reflects childhood memories that can feel beautiful, distant and slightly blurred over time.
The singer also linked the song’s grass imagery to the world of Toy Story 5. Toys experience the world from a very different height. As a result, blades of grass can become a major part of their view.
Swift said the grass reference also represents childhood, outdoor play and imagination. The image therefore connects the emotional themes of the song with the lives of the film’s toy characters.
Another lyric uses the image of a parachute. Swift connected the reference to the plastic army men in the Toy Story universe.
She also gave the line a deeper emotional meaning. The parachute can represent someone who helps another person during a difficult transition into adulthood.
Swift said she pays close attention to small details when writing songs. She believes those details can give listeners more to discover with every listen.
