Hollywood actor Joe Manganiello has revealed a severe and previously private health struggle that lasted for seven years, describing it as a period that nearly cost him his life.
The 49-year-old actor shared the details ahead of his upcoming memoir Bloodlines, where he explains how his health suddenly declined without clear warning. He says multiple autoimmune conditions began affecting different parts of his body, including his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system, leaving him in constant pain and physical distress.
Manganiello also disclosed that he underwent what he described as a “life-saving organ amputation,” though the exact cause of his illness remained unclear even after extensive medical testing. Doctors were unable to provide a definitive diagnosis, leaving him searching for answers during a prolonged and frightening medical crisis.
He has called this phase the most difficult period of his life, marked not only by physical suffering but also by emotional and psychological strain. In interviews, he described it as an ongoing fight for survival and a deep existential struggle.

As traditional treatments failed to help, Manganiello began exploring alternative paths, traveling internationally and focusing on spirituality, ancestry, and identity. During this journey, he also learned more about his Armenian heritage and the survival history of his ancestors during the Armenian genocide, which he says gave him strength and perspective.
Beyond his health battle, his personal life also changed significantly. After separating from actress Sofia Vergara in 2023 and finalizing their divorce in 2024, Manganiello later became engaged to Caitlin O’Connor and relocated from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh.
Now, he hopes that sharing his story will help others facing unexplained illnesses feel less alone and more determined to keep searching for answers.
