Punjab’s plan to revive its long-neglected film sector has gained momentum with the proposed Punjab Film City, a major project aimed at transforming Pakistan’s media landscape.

The initiative was discussed in a meeting between Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, focusing on long-term collaboration and industry development.

Planned on 50 acres in Lahore, the Film City will be part of the larger Nawaz Sharif IT City. It aims to serve as a fully integrated hub for film, television, digital media, visual effects, and post-production.

The project includes modern studios, sound stages, training institutes, and a film and music school, alongside facilities for large-scale productions. Officials say it will allow local creators to complete projects domestically, reducing reliance on foreign services.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the initiative as a step toward rebuilding a “collapsed” film industry and strengthening Pakistan’s global cultural presence.

A proposed regulatory authority will oversee production, offer incentives, and streamline approvals to attract local and international investment.

As the project moves forward, its success will depend on execution and sustained policy support to position Pakistan as a competitive media production hub.
