Olivia Wilde has reflected on the public scrutiny she faced during her high-profile relationship with Harry Styles, describing the reaction as intense and often difficult to understand.
Appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 42-year-old director was asked about the criticism that surrounded her romance with the 32-year-old singer, which began during production of Don’t Worry Darling in 2020 and ended in November 2022.
Wilde acknowledged that she still finds the scale of public reaction puzzling, saying she does not fully understand why the relationship triggered such strong opinions.
She pointed to broader societal patterns, suggesting that women in positions of perceived authority or age difference relationships often face harsher judgment than men in similar situations.
Wilde said much of the backlash felt disconnected from her actual experience, explaining that the relationship itself was “lovely,” grounded, and largely private despite its public visibility.
She noted that such fan relationships can create unrealistic expectations and emotional investment, which may contribute to strong reactions when a public figure’s personal life does not align with those expectations.
Wilde also spoke about how the couple maintained a private “bubble” during their relationship, saying that much of the negativity did not fully penetrate their day-to-day life together.
“It’s almost like the happiness made them mad,” she said, recalling moments when simple public displays, such as attending concerts, were met with negative commentary online.
The filmmaker also touched on broader double standards faced by women, particularly mothers, in public relationships, adding that societal expectations often shape how women are judged after separations.
