Nita Ambani celebrated the first anniversary of Swadesh in a rare Gujarati brocade sari that highlighted India’s rich textile heritage.
Known for supporting traditional Indian crafts, Ambani chose an Ashavali brocade sari from Royal Brocades for the occasion. The label was founded by third-generation weaver and textile revivalist Paresh Patel.
The look brought together centuries-old weaving traditions, intricate embroidery, and statement jewellery.
Nita Ambani Wears a Rare Ashavali Brocade Sari
Handwoven in Ridrol village in Gujarat, Ambani’s sari took five months to complete. Patel revealed that two artisans worked on the piece, handling the dyeing, warping, and weaving.
The sari features Ashavali brocade, a traditional weaving style associated with the historic Ashaval region near present-day Ahmedabad. The technique dates back to the ninth century.
Artisans created the sari on a traditional jala loom. Its detailed patterns include elephants and peacocks, known as hathi mor jangla. Paisley motifs and geometric lattice designs add further detail.
Heritage Motifs Make the Sari Stand Out
The sari’s borders feature parrots in a design inspired by meenakari jewellery work. Meanwhile, the pallu showcases a symbolic tree of life alongside decorative vases.
These traditional elements reflect the craftsmanship behind Ashavali textiles. They also give the sari a distinctive look rooted in Gujarat’s weaving heritage.

By choosing this piece for Swadesh’s anniversary, Ambani brought attention to a traditional craft and the artisans who continue to preserve it.
Nita Ambani Pairs the Sari With a Manish Malhotra Blouse
Ambani completed the sari with a custom blouse by designer Manish Malhotra.
An antique velvet koti, or vest, with ornate embroidery inspired the blouse design. Malhotra reworked the old embroidery into intricate gold floral patterns, creating a connection between the heritage garment and the contemporary blouse.
The styling added another layer of craftsmanship to the overall look.
Diamond Earrings and Ruby Jewellery Complete the Look
Ambani accessorised the sari with geometric diamond danglers and a tiered necklace featuring red stones.
She also wore ruby-encrusted bangles and a matching ring from her personal collection. Her simple hair and makeup allowed the richly patterned sari and statement jewellery to remain the focus.
The combination highlighted how traditional textiles can work alongside both antique pieces and modern designer creations.
