Melanie C has opened up about the emotional celebration of 30 years since the Spice Girls released their iconic debut single “Wannabe.”
The singer, also known as Sporty Spice, described the anniversary as a deeply emotional moment while reflecting on the song that transformed the group into global superstars.
Released in 1996 as part of the album Spice, “Wannabe” became one of the defining pop songs of the 1990s. The track sold millions of copies worldwide and introduced the Spice Girls’ famous “Girl Power” message to audiences around the globe.
Speaking at the Nordoff And Robbins Silver Clef Awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where she received the Global Impact Award, Melanie C said seeing the song in stores for the first time was a dream come true.
She recalled that while the group had clear goals, they never expected the level of worldwide success that followed.

The singer revealed that the anniversary was especially meaningful because all five Spice Girls remain connected and continue to share respect and appreciation for each other.
Victoria Beckham and Geri Horner also marked the milestone on social media, sharing emotional messages about the song that changed their lives.
Melanie C remembered the excitement of watching “Wannabe” climb the charts, from entering the Top 40 to eventually reaching number one. The song stayed at the top of the charts for seven weeks, creating a historic moment for the group.
The award ceremony also featured a special tribute when actor Richard E. Grant presented Melanie C with her honor while wearing his original sparkling pink suit from the 1997 film Spice World.
