Matt Damon Reveals Painful Experience Filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey
Matt Damon has shared behind-the-scenes details from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, revealing that the cast faced unexpected physical challenges while filming intense action scenes.
The Oscar-winning actor said wearing traditional Greek-style sandals for the movie caused significant discomfort, especially during scenes shot on hard stone surfaces.
Speaking on Radio Andy, Damon explained that many cast members struggled with back pain because of the demanding filming conditions and the authentic footwear used for the historical epic.
“A lot of us are middle-aged people,” Damon said, adding that running across stone surfaces in real sandals proved difficult and physically exhausting.
The actor, who plays Odysseus in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem, revealed that the cast dealt with more than just minor injuries during production.
According to Damon, their feet suffered scratches and cuts, but the biggest challenge was the intense back pain that followed long action sequences.
He joked that those filming days became a “heavy Advil” experience as the cast pushed through the physically demanding scenes.
Damon also shared another behind-the-scenes story involving his co-star Tom Holland. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he recalled that Holland’s elaborate costume became so restrictive that it caused discomfort during filming.
Damon said he initially thought Holland’s struggle was part of his acting performance before realizing the costume needed adjustment.
The Odyssey features a star-studded cast including Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film brings Homer’s ancient Greek adventure to the big screen with a modern cinematic approach.
