Director Adam Shankman has revealed that Mandy Moore was not Warner Bros.’ first choice to play Jamie Sullivan in the 2002 romantic drama A Walk to Remember.
Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast, Shankman said the studio initially pushed for Jessica Simpson, believing her public image and Christian faith made her a natural fit for the role of the minister’s daughter.
According to the director, executives were also interested in using the film as a potential stepping stone for Simpson, who was being considered for the role of Christine in a planned adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.
However, Shankman’s perspective changed after he heard Moore’s hit song I Wanna Be With You on the radio following a meeting with Simpson. He recalled being struck by the softness and vulnerability in Moore’s voice, qualities he had always imagined for Jamie Sullivan.
The director said seeing the cover of Moore’s So Real album further convinced him that she perfectly matched the character. His only concern, he joked, was whether the teenage pop star could act.
After meeting Moore, those doubts quickly disappeared. Shankman said her natural sweetness, innocence, and warmth were exactly what he envisioned for Jamie.
Moore ultimately landed the role and delivered one of the most memorable performances of her career. More than two decades later, A Walk to Remember remains a fan-favorite romance, with many viewers still associating Moore with the beloved character that helped launch her acting career.
