Maggie Gyllenhaal to Lead Venice Film Festival 2026 International Jury

American director, actress, and producer Maggie Gyllenhaal has been officially named the President of the International Competition Jury for the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The announcement, confirmed by the board of directors of La Biennale di Venezia, marks a significant homecoming for the filmmaker.

A Return to the Lido

Gyllenhaal’s relationship with Venice is deep-rooted. Her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, premiered in competition at the festival in 2021, where it was met with critical acclaim and earned her the Best Screenplay award.

“Venice has always supported truthful, singular voices and I am honored to play a part in continuing that brave and necessary tradition. I will not be standing in judgement, but in curiosity, admiration and excitement.” — Maggie Gyllenhaal

The Role of the Jury President

As president, Gyllenhaal will lead a panel of international cinema experts to assign the festival’s most prestigious honors, including:

The Golden Lion for Best Film.

The Silver Lion (Grand Jury Prize).

Volpi Cups for Best Actress and Best Actor.

Festival director Alberto Barbera, who recommended Gyllenhaal for the post, cited her “singular vision” and her rapid ascent as one of the most compelling voices in modern directing.

Gyllenhaal’s Busy 2026

The appointment comes during a prolific year for Gyllenhaal. Earlier in 2026, her latest directorial effort—the Warner Bros. title The Bride!—was released worldwide. The film, a fresh take on the Frankenstein mythos starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley, has further cemented her status as a powerhouse behind the camera.
