Keri Russell Explains Why She Does Not Want to Marry Matthew Rhys

Keri Russell has explained why she does not want to marry her longtime partner, Matthew Rhys. The couple have been together for nearly 13 years, but the actress says she is happy without marriage.

During an October 8 appearance on the Dear Chelsea podcast, the 50-year-old actress shared her views on marriage.

“We have kids, so that’s forever,” she said.

She also described marriage as “antiquated,” explaining that she does not feel the need to get married again.

Keri Russell Says Her Family Is Enough

Keri and Matthew began dating in late 2013. At the time, they played Soviet spies in the popular Cold War drama The Americans.

The couple welcomed their son, Sam, in May 2016. Keri also has two children, River, 19, and Willa, 13, from her previous marriage to Shane Deary.

During the podcast, host Chelsea Handler praised Keri and Matthew for staying together without getting married.

“I love it too. It is fun,” Keri replied.

Why Keri Russell Does Not Want Another Wedding

Keri was previously married to Shane Deary. They tied the knot in New York in February 2007 but separated in early 2013. Their divorce became official the following year.

After experiencing marriage once, Keri said she does not feel excited about planning another wedding.

“I’ve had a big party. I get to dress up all the time [for work],” she joked.

She explained that marriage means different things to different people. However, she does not believe it is necessary to prove a lasting relationship.

Keri Russell Shares Her Views on Marriage

Keri also pointed out how social expectations around marriage have changed over time.

“People used to have to be married to have a credit card. We can have credit cards now. I don’t need my last name to go away,” she said.

Her comments reflect her view that people no longer need marriage to gain independence or build a life together.

She also made it clear that she is comfortable with her current relationship.

“I’m cool. If you want to be here, be here! If you don’t, that’s cool too,” she added.

For Keri, a strong relationship does not depend on a wedding or a marriage certificate. Instead, she appears happy with the life she and Matthew have built together.
