John Oliver Extends HBO Deal Until 2027 Amid Warner Bros. Uncertainty

John Oliver Stays at HBO Through 2027 With New ‘Last Week Tonight’ Deal

Emmy-winning comedian John Oliver has renewed his HBO contract, keeping “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on air through 2027. The shorter extension comes as uncertainty grows around Warner Bros. Discovery’s proposed acquisition deal.

John Oliver will continue hosting his popular political satire program “Last Week Tonight” on HBO after agreeing to a new contract extension that runs through the end of 2027.

The latest agreement differs from Oliver’s previous renewals, which generally lasted three years. This time, HBO and the comedian reached a one-year extension amid ongoing changes surrounding the network’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.

The shorter contract arrives as Paramount Skydance’s proposed takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery remains a major topic in the entertainment industry. Oliver has repeatedly criticized the potential deal during episodes of “Last Week Tonight.”

During a March broadcast, Oliver joked about Paramount’s interest in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, making a sarcastic reference to the uncertainty surrounding the possible merger.

The comedian previously reacted to reports of Paramount’s acquisition efforts by warning the company to stay away from HBO, using his trademark humor to highlight concerns about the future of the network and creative independence.

Oliver has also targeted other Paramount-related controversies, including the company’s settlement with the Trump administration over a lawsuit involving CBS program “60 Minutes” and changes at CBS News following Bari Weiss’ appointment.

The renewed deal comes as “Last Week Tonight” returns with new episodes after its seasonal break. The latest episodes have focused heavily on President Donald Trump’s policies and political developments, topics that have frequently placed Oliver’s show at the center of public debate.

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” has become one of HBO’s most successful political comedy programs, earning multiple Emmy Awards for its investigative approach and satirical coverage of major global issues.

The show was previously renewed for three years in December 2023, securing its run through its 13th season. The new agreement ensures that Oliver will remain a key figure at HBO until 2027 despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the company’s future.
