James Charles has apologised following intense criticism over comments he made about a former Spirit Airlines employee who reportedly contacted him for financial support after the airline ceased operations earlier this month.
The controversy began after Charles posted a TikTok video discussing a direct message he claimed to have received from a former airline employee affected by the company’s collapse on May 2, 2026.
According to Charles, the message explained that the sender had lost her job following Spirit Airlines’ bankruptcy and included a GoFundMe link seeking financial assistance.
In his initial response, Charles criticised the woman for reaching out to influencers and celebrities for help. He referred to her as “lazy” and “entitled,” while arguing that job losses are a common reality faced by many people.
“Welcome to the real world,” he said in the now-deleted video, which quickly triggered backlash across social media platforms.
Critics accused the influencer of being dismissive toward workers facing sudden unemployment and financial hardship. Many users highlighted the scale of the airline shutdown, which reportedly left around 17,000 employees without jobs.
Charles later uploaded a second TikTok defending his position, although he admitted his wording had been harsh. In that video, he maintained that individuals should focus on job applications rather than sending donation requests to public figures.

He also addressed criticism regarding his wealth and public image, openly acknowledging that he was financially privileged.
“I am out of touch, first and foremost,” he said. “I am never going to be one of those influencers that gets online and pretends to be poor.”
That second video was also deleted after criticism continued to intensify online.
In a third TikTok posted afterward, Charles reversed course and publicly apologised for his earlier comments.
“This video was stupid. It was rude, it was obnoxious, it was privileged, and most importantly, it was completely unnecessary,” he admitted.
Charles also acknowledged the broader economic challenges many people currently face, saying that finding employment has become increasingly difficult.
He further claimed that he attempted to locate the original message in order to apologise privately and offer financial support directly to the former employee but was unable to find the conversation.
The incident has reignited discussions online about influencer responsibility, celebrity wealth, and public reactions to economic hardship during periods of mass layoffs and corporate collapse.
