Samsung Denies Allegations in $15M Lawsuit Over Dua Lipa’s Image Rights

Samsung Electronics has officially broken its silence regarding the $15 million lawsuit filed by global pop icon Dua Lipa. On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the South Korean tech giant rejected allegations that it used the singer’s likeness on television packaging without proper authorization, sparking a major legal standoff between the “Houdini” star and the electronics leader.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for Central California, accuses Samsung of violating copyright, trademark, and publicity rights by using a backstage photograph of Lipa on retail boxes distributed across the United States.

    Samsung Claims Third-Party Authorization

In a formal statement, Samsung Electronics dismissed the claims of “intentional misuse.” The company clarified that the image in question—reportedly taken at a 2024 music festival in Austin—was part of a promotional effort for its free streaming service, Samsung TV Plus.

Samsung asserted that the image was used to reflect content available from its third-party partners. According to the company, they received “explicit assurance” from a content partner that all necessary permissions had been secured, including the rights for use on physical retail packaging. Samsung emphasized its respect for intellectual property rights while maintaining that they acted in good faith based on the partner’s guarantees.

    The Timeline of the Dispute

The legal friction began nearly a year ago and has escalated despite previous attempts at mediation.

Initial Complaint and Response Following Dua Lipa’s first formal complaint in July 2025, Samsung took immediate steps to mitigate the issue by discontinuing the production of the original packaging. The company replaced the boxes with a new version and entered into mediation proceedings to settle the matter out of court.

The Breakdown of Negotiations Lipa’s legal team, however, ultimately decided to move forward with the federal lawsuit, seeking $15 million in damages. Her attorneys argue that the unauthorized use of the 2024 backstage photo constitutes a serious breach of her publicity rights, as she did not personally sign off on being the “face” of Samsung’s hardware packaging.

    Future Outlook and Legal Standing

Despite the denial of wrongdoing, Samsung indicated that it remains open to a “constructive resolution” with the 30-year-old singer’s team. The company noted that while they reject the accusations of illegal conduct, they value their relationship with the artistic community.

For Dua Lipa, the lawsuit is part of a broader trend of high-profile artists aggressively defending their digital and physical likeness against tech conglomerates. As negotiations continue, the case will likely hinge on the specific contracts held between Samsung and its mysterious “content partner.” If a settlement is not reached, the trial could set a significant precedent for how celebrity imagery is sourced for smart TV interfaces and marketing materials.
