Steven Spielberg Issues Stark Warning to Viral Hitmakers Behind Obsession and Backrooms

Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg has issued a strong reminder to emerging directors following the unexpected box office success of indie films Obsession and Backrooms.

Speaking on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, the legendary director shared advice for filmmakers Curry Barker (Obsession) and Kane Parsons (Backrooms), both of whom recently delivered major global hits on relatively small budgets.

Spielberg emphasized that early success can be misleading and warned against letting fame influence future work. He noted that each new film demands the same level of effort and reinvention, regardless of past achievements.

“Don’t let success go to your heads,” Spielberg said, stressing that every project begins as if it were the first. He added that even long careers do not remove the uncertainty of starting over with each new production.

The director explained that while a hit film can build industry respect and open new doors, it does not guarantee future results. He encouraged young filmmakers to treat every project as a fresh challenge rather than a continuation of past success.

Both Obsession and Backrooms have emerged as surprise global hits. Obsession, produced on a modest $750,000 budget, has earned approximately $238.7 million worldwide. Meanwhile, Backrooms, made for around $10 million, has grossed over $220 million globally.

Spielberg’s comments highlight the unpredictable nature of modern filmmaking, where low-budget projects can suddenly achieve massive commercial success.

As the industry continues to evolve, his advice serves as a reminder that longevity in cinema depends not just on hits, but on consistency, discipline, and humility.
