Colin Hanks Pays Tribute to John Candy’s ‘Personal’ Acting Approach

Beyond the Comedy Colin Hanks on John Candy’s True Craft

Filmmaker Colin Hanks has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late John Candy, shedding light on the profound personal nature of the actor’s performances while celebrating a new documentary dedicated to the beloved comedy star.

Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary event in Los Angeles, Hanks joined Candy’s children, Jennifer Candy-Sullivan and Chris Candy, for an emotional panel discussion surrounding the film John Candy: I Like Me, which is currently streaming on Prime Video.

Reflecting on Candy’s enduring cultural legacy, Hanks noted that while the public often remembers him strictly as a larger-than-life comedian, his artistic capabilities ran much deeper.

“A lot of people just remember him as being a comedian and a funny guy, but really, he was just a complete performer,” Hanks explained. “There was always a little bit of John in each one of his performances. He brings a part of himself to each role.”

Channeling Personality Into Iconic Characters

To illustrate Candy’s unique approach to character work, Hanks pointed directly to the actor’s early sketch comedy days on the influential series SCTV (Second City Television). He referenced memorable characters like the boisterous Johnny LaRue and the smooth Johnny Toronto as prime examples of how Candy masterfully channeled distinct layers of his own complex personality into external performances.

“That’s all performance,” Hanks added during the panel. “That’s all a part of him having something inside of him that he needs to get out and perform.”

A Lasting Childhood Impression

The directorial drive behind the documentary stems from a deeply rooted personal connection. Hanks recalled meeting the comedy icon when he was just an eight-year-old child, describing the brief encounter as a formative and incredibly positive experience that stayed with him into adulthood.

The Impact of Candy’s Warmth

Authentic Kindness: Hanks recalled that Candy was “exactly the way you hoped he was,” noting that it is a rare human quality to make a young child instantly feel safe, liked, and trusted.

A Director’s Responsibility: This genuine warmth heavily guided Hanks’ creative choices behind the camera. He expressed feeling a profound artistic responsibility to capture Candy’s true spirit, ensuring that audiences who never had the chance to meet the actor in person could still feel his distinct kindness radiating through the screen.
