Filmmaker Colin Hanks has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late John Candy, shedding light on the profound personal nature of the actor’s performances while celebrating a new documentary dedicated to the beloved comedy star.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary event in Los Angeles, Hanks joined Candy’s children, Jennifer Candy-Sullivan and Chris Candy, for an emotional panel discussion surrounding the film John Candy: I Like Me, which is currently streaming on Prime Video.
Reflecting on Candy’s enduring cultural legacy, Hanks noted that while the public often remembers him strictly as a larger-than-life comedian, his artistic capabilities ran much deeper.
“A lot of people just remember him as being a comedian and a funny guy, but really, he was just a complete performer,” Hanks explained. “There was always a little bit of John in each one of his performances. He brings a part of himself to each role.”
Channeling Personality Into Iconic Characters
To illustrate Candy’s unique approach to character work, Hanks pointed directly to the actor’s early sketch comedy days on the influential series SCTV (Second City Television). “That’s all performance,” Hanks added during the panel. “That’s all a part of him having something inside of him that he needs to get out and perform.”
