Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has responded to BTS’ decision not to submit their music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards, saying he respects the group’s choice while defending the academy’s new Asian Pop category.
BTS recently surprised fans worldwide after announcing that they would not participate in the 2027 Grammy nomination process. The group said they wanted their music to be appreciated without being separated by region or language.
In a statement, Mason expressed disappointment over the decision but acknowledged BTS’ perspective as fellow music creators.
“I am saddened to hear that BTS has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year, but as a music creator, I understand and respect their decision,” he said.
The Grammy CEO also addressed criticism surrounding the newly introduced Asian Pop category, explaining that the category was created to highlight the growing influence and diversity of Asian artists.

He clarified that artists nominated in genre-based categories can still compete for major Grammy honors, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.
“Recognition in a genre category and recognition in the General Field are not mutually exclusive,” Mason said, emphasizing that all eligible artists can pursue multiple paths for Grammy recognition.
BTS members shared a joint statement on their personal Instagram accounts, thanking their fans, known as ARMY, while explaining their decision.
