What Is HBO’s Rooster About?
Rooster takes place at Ludlow College, where Katie Russo, played by Charly Clive, teaches art history.
Katie is the daughter of Greg Russo, an author played by Steve Carell. During the first season, Greg visits the college to deliver a guest lecture.
His visit leads to a new opportunity. College president Walter Mann, played by John C. McGinley, offers Greg a visiting professorship and the chance to lead a seminar.

Greg accepts the position because he hopes to help his daughter. Katie, however, wants to handle the problems in her marriage on her own.
Her husband, Archie Bates, played by Phil Dunster, teaches Russian studies at the college. Greg’s decision to stay brings their family struggles into the university setting.
Michael Urie’s Connection to Sutton Foster
Urie’s casting also brings an interesting connection to the wider world of television creator Bill Lawrence.
Fans of Shrinking may remember a storyline in which Urie’s character delivered a long monologue about adopting a baby. During the scene, he considered naming the child Sutton after actor Sutton Foster.
He also joked about reversing the name if the couple adopted a boy.
In the storyline, the couple eventually welcomed a girl and named her Sutton. Foster is now also part of the Rooster cast, creating a fun connection between the two projects.
Whether the new season will acknowledge this coincidence remains to be seen. For now, viewers will have to wait for more details about the upcoming episodes.
